I am really proud that I kept up my reminder to publish the blog everyday. Today, what caught my eye was Rita and thank god it was moving away but whenever a natural disaster strikes all you can think of is "We are still human there is some force beyon our comprehension". Be it the New Orleans Disaster or the Asian Tsunami there is nothing we as humans could have done other than in the case of Tsunami, if only we had good forcasting techniques some lives could have been saved and if the levees were fixed we could have stopped flooding in New orleans.
But that is what the natural disaster is about, you can never really prepare for it. The tsunami devasatation was really painful and the video images and pictures still haunt my dreams. From my side, I sent out some contribution to the Prime Minister's relief fund and was surprised to see the professionalism reflected by PMO's office by sending a receipt and a note from the PM thanking my contribution. This you need to see in the perspective, because I have seen how the govt. machinery works in India and the needed important work never completes and here you see the PMO sending a thank you card. Way to go!!.
I can see the chaos when something like this happens. I have seen something similar but in a different light when Rajiv Gandhi was assasinated. It was during the "Farewell" party in a hotel in Madras on the 21st May 1991, when we were having nice party with few drinks and food and all of a sudden all hell broke lose when a waiter came over and whispered about the assasination and requested us to disperse. Reluctantly, we returned but were grateful that we did. Because on our way we were pelted with stones on the streets and were really happy to reach back the hostel. The next few days were like living in hell with limited food available through the cafeteria and he used sell anything by naming them as anything and you need to queue up to get a bite. The city was standstill no incoming/outgoing buses to and from the city and no transportation inside the city. The streets were deserted and we surived. I can never forget this incident nor could many of my classmades in Guindy.
